Food labelling scandal – ‘with the stroke of a pen’

The struggle for the right to have clear, transparent food labelling has been a battleground in England for many years. As ever, the interest & pockets of the food corporations are valued over the health & social rights of the population.

The latest scandal on food labels has been in India. As the article below highlights, more than 70 million Indians suffer with diet-related chronic ill health, this is estimated to rise to 120 million.

Despite this, the government has opted to postpone its decision to put red warning labels on unhealthy packaged food. Its proposal will be reviewed by The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) –  a controversial US non-profit organisation with a revolving door for the food corporations including the Coca-Cola Company.

ILSI has branches in 17 countries and is funded by giants of the food & drug industries.

This is further evidence that we need accountability and democratic control of the food system! Read more from the NY Times here.
